Syracuse Youth Hostel
ARC 108 Introduction to Architecture Design II / Spring 2023 / Instructor Kyle Miller
The primary transformational applications I utilized for this project involved: stacking, rotating, and extending different units without compromising the visitor’s privacy and adequate sunlight. I achieved this by strategically aligning all the living space on the west portion resulting in comfortable privacy between the hostel residents and the people living in the existing building.
Some sleeping units were rotated 20 degrees and stretched to form spaces of inhabitation and a cracked hallway. The cracked hallway encourages a diverse circulation of intimate and social. The visitors are immediately welcomed by the rotated units and refracted sunlight upon entering the building.
To add an interesting element or a bit of chaos to the design, a curved roofing system was introduced and compliments the second-floor plate’s existing language. Simultaneously, the playfulness of this design allows for a more playful environment that draws people together.
