Linear Continuity and Discontinuity

ARC 207 Architectural Design III / Fall 2023 / Instructor Emily Pellicano

This project explores the possibility of creating linear continuity and discontinuity through synthetic image interpretation using AI. The synthetic image inspired me to create a systematic design rule by cutting the shapes in various directions using lines. The result creates different repetitive horizontal wall slabs in multiple lengths and with few distinctive curve walls that work as a directional tool. The program placements are divided into private and public; the labs and offices are discrete from the public. Three courtyards in the building create a transitional stage from public to private and maximize the possibility of bringing the interior to the exterior. In the exterior space, people can walk down onto the existing landscape to the carved-out spaces underneath the building. The carved-out spaces mirror the shapes above, which form a shelter for various gathering purposes. In the end, to create an interactive experience with the landscape and the architecture, the linear horizontal walls are further extended onto the terrain, creating a spatial experience of linearity that exists simultaneously inside and outside
